From January 10th to 11th, under Chinese mediation and promotion, representatives of the Myanmar military and three armed groups, including the Kachin Independence Army (KIA), Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), and Arakan Army (AA), held talks in Kunming, Yunnan, China. They reached a formal ceasefire agreement.
This was revealed by the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Hua Chunying, during a regular press briefing on January 12th.
Hua stated that both sides agreed to an immediate ceasefire, the withdrawal of military personnel, and the resolution of relevant disputes and demands through peaceful negotiations. Both parties pledged not to harm the safety of Chinese border residents and personnel involved in projects in Myanmar. Consultations were also held on other matters related to the ceasefire arrangement.
Hua emphasized that maintaining the momentum of ceasefire talks in northern Myanmar is in the interest of all parties involved and contributes to the peace and stability of the China-Myanmar border region. China hopes that all relevant parties in Myanmar will earnestly implement the ceasefire agreement, exercise maximum restraint, continue to address issues through dialogue and negotiation, and jointly promote progress in the peace process in northern Myanmar.
"China is willing to continue providing support and assistance within its capabilities and play a constructive role in this regard," she said.
