I've been charged even though I canceled auto-renewal?

Recently, Ms. Ding shared a frustrating experience with the public hotline. In September of last year, she subscribed to Baidu Cloud's quarterly membership and immediately turned off auto-renewal. However, at the end of December, she received a notification of a 68 yuan charge, forcing her into the next quarter's membership. What's going on?

Auto-renewal has become a common method for many online service providers to maintain close connections with users. To enhance user loyalty and extend membership periods, businesses often provide options for consecutive monthly/quarterly/yearly memberships. The displayed price for the first installment is often more attractive than the single-month/quarter/year membership. Therefore, many users routinely subscribe to consecutive memberships and immediately turn off auto-renewal to avoid forgetting when the period expires.

Ms. Ding mentioned that to prevent forgetting, she immediately turned off auto-renewal within minutes of subscribing to the quarterly membership on the Baidu Cloud client and unsubscribed in the subsequent Apple "Settings." The Baidu Cloud app displayed that she had canceled, but she still fell victim to auto-renewal tactics.

Where did the problem lie? Some users pointed out that for Apple iOS users, canceling auto-renewal involves three steps.

  1. Cancel the consecutive monthly/quarterly/yearly service within the app.
  2. In "Settings" → Tap Apple account avatar → Tap Subscriptions → Select the subscription service to be closed → Cancel subscription.
  3. The most crucial step is to manually open Alipay or WeChat Pay and cancel the binding of automatic deductions.
